BLACKBIRD

by David Harrower

A work created from the meeting of three creative artists – Alexandre Tenório, director; Cristina Cavalcanti and Nelson Baskerville, actors. In addition to fulfilling these functions, the three effectively collaborated in the conception of the show, jointly creating the scenery, costumes and lighting, which is particularly unusual, as no theater equipment is used. This characterizes BLACKBIRD as a unique event, as it brings together the views of the artists involved, resulting in a direct reflection of their perceptions of David Harrower's own text.

The show portrays the 70 explosive minutes of the encounter between a man, Ray, and a woman, Una. The last time they saw each other was twenty years ago. He was arrested, accused of pedophilia and since then the two have tried to get back on their feet, in vain. Now she goes looking for him, not in search of revenge, but in an attempt to rescue and understand this dark past. "Blackbird", which won acclaimed Scottish author David Harrower an Olivier Award, shows how the attitudes of the past irreversibly affect the present, and questions everything we know about love, guilt and morals.

The play takes place in a room used as a cafeteria by company employees. Crammed with trash and dirt, it symbolizes the lives of these two characters. The light is cold, the environment inhospitable, claustrophobic. There they will have to face each other, eye to eye. There is no refuge. And the public participates in this meeting as if they were inside the room.

All the elements, the light, the scenery, the objects, make up the space in which those characters are inserted almost realistically. In fact, just like in interpretation, there is nothing that does not carry some meaning. The result is almost cinematic, and the actors are in charge of the scene, through precise direction, in which each word, each gesture, follows a score.

Harrower's text is perfect for this, as it sounds like a song. (Let us remember that he is the translator of the Norwegian Jon Fosse into English). Sentences are never completed, the flow of thought is constantly interrupted by the other or by oneself. The idea inserted in the sentence must be understood, and sometimes the reasoning will be completed pages – or minutes – later.

A rollercoaster of feelings and emotions, leaving the viewer in doubt as to who is the villain or the victim. There is no answer. The debate is open. There is only one certainty, that time passes and there is no going back.
